Scalable enterprise file sharing — Docker Compose, Docker, Traefik, PostgreSQL

Scalable enterprise file sharing

Private file sync and collaboration on your own infrastructure — full control over data, cost, and compliance without depending on a public cloud.

Problem

Organizations need teams to share files, collaborate, and keep documents inside their own perimeter. Public cloud drives solve the convenience problem, but they take control of the data, lock you into recurring cost, and make compliance harder.

A private platform fixes that — if it can actually run in production: survive restarts, handle concurrent users, stay reachable over HTTPS, and be deployed the same way every time. A single container is not enough.

System Design

This project is a production-ready private file-sharing stack. The file service sits behind a reverse proxy with automatic HTTPS. A relational database holds metadata. An in-memory cache speeds up sessions and file locking so concurrent edits do not collide.

Configuration lives in environment variables. Deployment is repeatable. Persistent volumes keep files and metadata across restarts.

Architecture Decisions

  • Multi-service containers so the whole platform comes up together
  • A production database instead of a local file store
  • In-memory cache for sessions and transactional file locking
  • Reverse proxy with automatic HTTPS and routing
  • Secrets in environment variables, not in source control
  • Persistent volumes for user files and metadata
  • Scripts for deploy, health checks, and backups

Tradeoffs

  • You own backups, updates, and uptime
  • More moving parts than a managed cloud — in exchange for full data control
  • A single-host stack is simple to run but is not multi-node high availability
  • Config changes usually require restarting the stack

Production Behavior

Set the domain and credentials, then deploy. Traffic reaches the file service over HTTPS. Metadata lives in the database; the cache absorbs frequent operations.

Back up volumes regularly and check service health after each change. Built for teams that need an internal alternative to consumer cloud drives, at a scale that holds up in an organization.
